Bible for the Day #4

Proverbs 3:5-6  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

  • What is trust?
  • What does it mean to do something with all your heart?
  • What does it mean to trust with all your heart?
  • Why should you not lean on your own understanding?
  • How can you acknowledge God in your everyday life?
  • What is the promise he gives?

Dear God, help me to be confident in you and not worry or stress.  Help me to be self-controlled and loving.  I know you are all powerful and I can do all things through you.

~ Amen

Bible for the Day #3

Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.

  • What qualities do you value most in a friend?  Some qualities might be; Godly, loyal, discernment, honesty, generosity, trustworthy, encouragement, being real without being mean, dependability, non-judgmental, listener, kind, loving, caring, protective of me or will stand up for me, helpful, respectful, open-hearted.
  • Have you ever been somewhere with a friend and secretly thought “I hope no one I know sees me here”?
  • Did it make you question the company you were keeping?
  • Do you believe who you spend your free time with really matters?

God help me make the right decisions about the people I keep in my life.  If I am not strong enough to influence them, I pray you will open a door so I may exit their life.  But if it is your will, please help me to be an influencer to everyone I come in contact with.

~Amen

Bible for the Day #2

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.  Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

  • What two qualities did God command Joshua to have?
  • What characteristics was Joshua not to have?
  • What was God’s promise to Joshua?
  • Do you believe these promises are for you as well?

God help me to not be fearful or distressed but always through you, have courage and strength to face whatever the day may bring.

~Amen

Salmon With Green Onion, Tomatoes and Capers

I don’t like plain salmon, I mean, salmon is good, but I like a lot of flavor with it.  These toppings are awesome together!  I thought of several toppings and if the flavors would mesh well and boy was I right.  All you need is

  • 2 cuts of salmon, skinned, the total weight was one pound.
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Italian seasoning
  • 3 green onions chopped
  • 1 diced Roma tomato (Roma or Plum tomatoes are meatier, others are mainly seeds and juice
  • 3 tbs of chopped capers with 1 tbs of juice

Pour extra virgin olive oil in a deep plate and lay the fish in it.  Pour a little olive oil over the fish and sprinkle with Italian seasoning.  Turn the fish filet over and sprinkle with Italian seasoning again.  Place the fish in a pan of extra virgin olive oil on high heat.  When you see it’s very hot, lay the filets in the pan and put a lid over it.  Watch it carefully.  When it has cooked halfway through turn the filets over.  Inbetween the filets and on the sides, start adding the toppings.  I add the capers first.  Make sure there is still olive oil in the pan so it can sautee.  Then add the tomatoes and move these toppings around as much as you can. The salmon will soak up these wonderful flavorings of the toppings and juice as they are cooking.  Then add the green onion.  The green onion is very mild, it will add a nice spring flavor so let it sautee but don’t let it cook down.  When the salmon is done, remove the filets and add the toppings to the filets and enjoy.  You won’t even need salt and pepper.  You could even shred the salmon and toppings and mix with penne pasts.  Yes, thank you, I believe I will… stay tuned!!

ENJOY!!

Bible for the Day #1

Psalm 119:11  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

  • Why is it important to memorize God’s word and keep it hidden in your heart?  When I think of God’s word being hidden in my heart, I think of hidden treasure.  God’s word is a treasure and the Bible tells us that by hiding it in our heart, or by knowing it, it will help us to not sin against Him.
  • How does this verse tell us we can be protected from sinning?  If we hide God’s word in our heart, then we know his word, and knowing his word means we know what pleases him, and what he wants from us and if we know these things when we are tempted, we will know what choice to make.  We can choose the good path.
  • What word in this verse tells us it is still a choice whether we sin or not?  The word “might”.  This verse says “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”  It doesn’t say “so I won’t sin against you” or “I will not sin against you.”  God created us in his image, but we are still human, and thus make human choices.  We may not intend to sin, and we may have good intentions, but we still sin.  This verse tells me that as long as I know God’s word, and it is hidden in my heart so I can pull from it at any time, I have a better chance of not sinning against my Father.

God I know I am a sinner, but I am thankful that give me every opportunity to be pure before you.  Thank you for not treating me as my sins deserve and help me be a better Christian.

-Amen

Goulash With Campanelle Pasta

Yeah! You know what it is, it’s like spaghetti but with a different pasta.  Usually elbows but I like to change it up sometime and use something fancy.

In this recipe, you can omit any of the ingredients you don’t like.  Here’s what you will need:

  • 1 pound of ground beef, (if using two just double the recipe or add enough to your liking.
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 1 onion (I chose red)
  • 1 can of Rotel (fire roasted with green chilies)
  • 1 can of tomato sauce
  • Italian seasoning
  • minced garlic
  • mushrooms
  • splash of olive oil

First, brown the ground beef.  Drain the grease, if there is any.  I buy the 90% so there isn’t much grease so I add a little olive oil to the meat then add the diced bell pepper and sautee as you dice the onion.  Add the onion to the ground beef and stir.   Once the onion and peppers have softened just a little, add the Italian seasoning and mushrooms.  Replace the lid and let simmer for just a few minutes.

Next, add a can of Rotel and stir.  Pour a little chicken broth in the empty Rotel can and add to the pot.

Add tomato sauce and simmer with the lid on.  Put on a pot of water to boil.  To get it to boil faster put the lid on.  Continue to let the sauce simmer.

Once the water is boiling, add your favorite pasta.  Let the sauce simmer until the pasta is tender.

Drain the pasta, then add it to the sauce along with a tablespoon of minced garlic and stir.  Don’t worry about the garlic being too strong, it won’t be.  If you add the garlic earlier it will cook away the flavor and you really want to taste a little of the garlic. It’s good for you, good for fighting inflammation

Enjoy!!

Book Review: No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy

I purchased this book from Audible.  Narrated by Tom Stechschulte. Unabridged 7 and a half hours.

This book was wonderfully terrible.  Many associate older people with a simpler time, a time where people respected each other to the point they could leave their door unlocked when they left home.  Because really, who would enter someone else’s house without permission?  Where strangers nod to each other as they pass on the street.  Manners and human kindness meant more than a name or name brand on your back.  The title seems to indicate that those times are long gone and the people from those times are no longer welcome and there is a new kind of villain.  A villain with no boundaries and no respect for the living and they act as there are no consequences for their deeds.  I believe this quote in the book says it all;

“They dont have no respect for the law? That aint half of it. They dont even think about the law. It dont seem to even concern em.” – Sheriff Bell, page 216.

Cormac McCarthy writes in such a way he can tell an entire story in a sentence. He is deliberate in the words he chooses.   This book was hard to put down once I began reading it.  It was surprisingly easy to read since there were no semicolons, quotations, or colons  Cormac once said those things made the story too messy.  Although he did periods and a comma here and there.

His words are straightforward which really brings the characters to life.  I saw the movie that included Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss,  an awesome Javier Bardem as Chigurh, and Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Bell and a smaller part, Carson Wells played by Woody Harrelson.  Javier Bardem was ruthless and awesome to watch.  I enjoyed how he interacted with the older people like the man at the register at the gas station who called a coin toss for his life without knowing it.  Also, the office manager where Moss lived.  In the movie, she copped an attitude when Chigurh began asking questions about Moss.  The office manager had no idea who she was dealing with and this was not in the book.  Chigurh paid attention to their answers when he asked questions.  It showed they were from different times which was also a nod to the title.

Believable characters, read the book.
