Bible for the Day #1

Psalm 119:11  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

  • Why is it important to memorize God’s word and keep it hidden in your heart?  When I think of God’s word being hidden in my heart, I think of hidden treasure.  God’s word is a treasure and the Bible tells us that by hiding it in our heart, or by knowing it, it will help us to not sin against Him.
  • How does this verse tell us we can be protected from sinning?  If we hide God’s word in our heart, then we know his word, and knowing his word means we know what pleases him, and what he wants from us and if we know these things when we are tempted, we will know what choice to make.  We can choose the good path.
  • What word in this verse tells us it is still a choice whether we sin or not?  The word “might”.  This verse says “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”  It doesn’t say “so I won’t sin against you” or “I will not sin against you.”  God created us in his image, but we are still human, and thus make human choices.  We may not intend to sin, and we may have good intentions, but we still sin.  This verse tells me that as long as I know God’s word, and it is hidden in my heart so I can pull from it at any time, I have a better chance of not sinning against my Father.

God I know I am a sinner, but I am thankful that give me every opportunity to be pure before you.  Thank you for not treating me as my sins deserve and help me be a better Christian.
