Bible for the Day #22

Fruit of the Spirit

2

Galatians 5:22-23 King James Version (KJV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Some definitions of the words in this verse that are in more detail.

Longsuffering: Having or showing patience in spite of troubles especially those caused by other people.

Gentleness:  The quality of being kind tender or mild-mannered

Goodness: in man is not a mere passive quality, but the deliberate preference of right to wrong, the firm and persistent resistance of all moral evil, and the choosing and following of all moral good.

Faith: complete trust or confidence in someone or something

Meekness: Mild of temper; soft; gentle; not easily provoked or irritated; yielding; given to forbearance under injuries.

Temperance: moderation or self-restraint, especially in eating and drinking  (I believe this also shines a light on other verses about gluttony (overeating) and drunkness (also overindulgence)  the bible speaks against both these things and can be summed up in one word, self-control.

These are things that we should be practicing every day to live a godly and righteous life.  It is so easy to overeat or to lose your temper when things do not go your way, but we must remember that these things can lead to sin.  God sets us up to win, he does not try to trap us and say “Ah ha! I gotcha!” He is gentle loving and caring and we should try to imitate his character.
